KUCHING: Datuk Amar Puan Sri Laila Taib passed away at 3.40pm yesterday, leaving a void that will be felt by all Sarawakians.
She breathed her last at her residence in Demak Jaya, Jalan Bako here after battling a short illness. She was 68.
Her husband, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, children and other family members, including relatives, were by her side.
Her passing was officially announced in a press statement issued by Deputy State Secretary Datuk Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani at 8pm last night.
Morshidi said Laila would be laid to rest at the cemetery in Demak Jaya at 11.30am today.
Members of the public who wish to pay their last respects may do so before 11am.
Laila was born in Poland on March 1, 1941, into a Muslim Polish family. After the war, during which time Germany invaded Europe, Laila’s family decided to migrate to Australia in December 1949.
Her contribution to society started as early as 1953 when she was still a student at the Adelaide Girls’ High School, South Australia, and this continued during her undergraduate years as a medical student at the University of Adelaide in 1959.
She was the acting secretary to the Islamic Society of South Australia and then a religious teacher at the Adelaide Mosque, while working as a civil officer in the Public Works Department of South Australia until 1960.
Laila met Taib when he was studying to become a lawyer in Australia. They were married on Jan 13, 1959 at the Adelaide Mosque.
The couple has been blessed with four children — Jamilah Hamidah, Dato Sri Mahmud Abu Bekir, Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman and Hanifah — and 15 grandchildren.
Laila was a leader in her own right, championing the cause of the less fortunate, orphans and women, among others.
She was also an exemplary Muslim, passionate about the arts and concerned about protecting the environment.
She was always driven towards doing her bit for the betterment of Sarawakians.
The list of organisations that Laila had led or had been involved in, in one way or another, is a lengthy one.
Among them were the Sarawak Badan Amal Tenaga Isteri-Isteri (Sabati), Malaysian Muslim Welfare Association (Perkim), Sarawak Heart Foundation, Malaysian Red Crescent and the Sarawak Orphan’s Welfare Board (Peryatim), which has an orphanage named after her.
